CAPTAIN ROBERT ABRAM BARTLETT

LE CAPITAINE ROBERT ABRAM BARTLETT

1875 - 1946

 

Born in Brigus, Newfoundland, "Captain Bob" followed a family tradition of life at sea. He commanded the ROOSEVELT during Peary's arctic expedition of 1905-06, accompanied Peary to the last relay point on the trek to the Pole in 1908-09, and commanded the KARLUK in the Canadian Arctic Expedition of 1913-18. Between 1926 and 1945 he made annual voyages to the arctic and though unschooled in the sciences won professional recognition for his major contributions to the knowledge of northern waters and their wildlife. He is buried at Brigus.

Né B Brigus (Terre-Neuve), "le capitaine Bob" perpétua la tradition familiale en devenant marin. Il commanda le ROOSEVELT lors de l'expédition de Peary dans l'Arctique en 1905-06, accompagna celui-ci jusqu'B la derniPre étape de son voyage au Pôle en 1908-09, et il eut la charge du KARLUK lors de l'Expédition canadienne de l'Arctique en 1913-18. De ses voyages annuels dans l'Arctique de 1926 B 1945, cet amateur rapporta, au sujet des eaux arctiques et de leur faune, des observations hautement prisées par les spécialistes. Il fut enterré B Brigus.
