BASQUE WHALERS IN LABRADOR LES BALEINIERS BASQUES AU LABRADOR In late medieval Europe whale oil was important as an illuminant and in various manufacturing processes. By the mid-16th century Spanish and French Basque whalers had extended their activities to the western Atlantic, where one of their principal harbours was known as Havre des Buttes or Butus, now identified as Red Bay. underwater and land-based archaeology here and at other sites along the Strait of Belle Isle has revealed significant evidence of this hitherto overlooked episode in Canadian history. En Europe, à la fin du Moyen Age, l'huile de baleine servait à l'éclairage et à divers procédés manufacturiers. Au milieu du XVIe siècle, les baleiniers basques, français et espagnols, avaient étendu leurs activités à l'océan Atlantique occidental, où l'un de leurs principaux postes était Havre des Buttes ou Butus. Dans les années 1970 ce site fut identifié à Red Bay. Des travaux subséquents d'archéologie subaquatique et terrestre, ici et le long du détroit de Belle-Isle, révélèrent d'intéressants aspects de cet épisode jusqu'ici méconnu de l'histoire canadienne
