MALLARD COTTAGE - LA MAISON MALLARD Built sometime between 1820 and 1840, this cottage was the home of the Mallard family who settled in Quidi Vidi at the beginning of the 19th century. With its low hipped-roof and two-room, central chimney plan, it is typical of houses built by the immigrants who came from southeast Ireland to Newfoundland in the first half of the 19th century. The five- bay facade, with suggestions of classicism in its symmetry, is commonly found in Newfoundland vernacular houses of the period. The building still retains sections of its original beaded clapboard. Construite entre 1820 et 1840, cette maison fut habitée par la famille Mallard qui s'établit à Quidi Vidi au début du XIXe siècle. Son toit à croupe basse et son aménagement sur deux pièces avec cheminée centrale en font un parfait exemple des maisons construites par les immigrants du sud- est de l'Irlande arrivés à Terre-Neuve durant la première moitié du XIXe siècle. La façade à cinq baies, de symétrie classique, est commune à nombre de maisons simples de l'époque. Le bâtiment a encore une partie de son parement d'origine en planches à clin moulurées. |
