SIR AMBROSE SHEA - 1815 1905 Born in St. John's, Shea served as a member of the Newfoundland House of Assembly almost continuously from 1848 until 1882. He was an advocate of union with the other colonies of British North America and was a delegate to the Québec Conference in 1864. The following year he joined the executive of a pro-confederation coalition which was defeated in 1869 by a strong anti-union campaign. He continued to serve the colony by promoting fisheries and agriculture and was made Speaker of the House in 1885. Knighted in 1883, he was governor of the Bahamas from 1887 until 1895, and died in England. Né à St-Jean, Shea fut membre de la Chambre d'Assemblée de Terre-Neuve presque sans interruption de 1848 à 1882. Il milita pour l'union des colonies de l'Amérique du Nord britannique et fut délégué à la Conférence de Québec en 1864. L'année suivante, il se joignit à la coalition qui était en faveur de la Confédération. Mais ce gouvernement fut battu après un seul mandat, par une campagne intensive contre l'union. Shea continua à servir la colonie en favorisant l'expansion des pêcheries et de l'agriculture et il fut nommé Président de la Chambre en 1885. Il fut gouverneur des Bahamas de 1887 à 1895 et mourut en Angleterre. |
