WABANA IRON ORE MINES - LES MINES DE FER DE WABANA Here, from 1895 to 1966, men from Bell Island, Conception Bay and elsewhere in Newfoundland mined one of the world's largest bodies of red hematite iron ore. Nova Scotia steel-makers opened the first mines here, and the union of Wabana iron with Cape Breton coal created an integrated steel industry in the Atlantic region. On Bell Island the culture of the outports blended into an industrial workplace. Starting from open pits, miners followed the ore far out under the bay. For a time these were Newfoundland's most important mines, and a mainstay of the local economy. De 1895 à 1966, des hommes de l'île Bell, de la baie Conception et d'ailleurs à Terre-Neuve exploitèrent ici un des plus vastes gisements d'hématite rouge au monde. Des aciéristes néo-écossais ouvrirent les premières mines ici, et une industrie sidérurgique intégrée naquit dans la région de l'exploitation mixte du fer de Wabana et du charbon du Cap- Breton. La culture des hameaux de l'île Bell s'intégra au contexte industriel. Les mines, d'abord à ciel ouvert, s'étendaient loin sous la baie. Pendant un temps, elles furent les plus importantes de Terre-Neuve, de même qu'un pivot de l'économie locale. |
