Plaque Text

SIR RICHARD WHITBOURNE

Active in the Newfoundland trade and fishery from 1579, this Devonshire mariner and merchant was an early advocate of colonization. He was commissioned by the High Court of Admiralty in 1615 to investigate conflicts between fishermen and settlers. Whitbourne held the first known court of law in Newfoundland, here at Trinity Bay. He later served briefly as governor of William Vaughan's colony at Renews. His Discourse and discovery of New-found-land, published in 1620 to promote settlement, remains one of the most valuable descriptions of the early colonial history of Newfoundland.
