WINNING OF RESPONSIBLE GOVERNMENT

L'OBTENTION DE LA RESPONSABILITÉ MINISTÉRIELLE

When, on May 22, 1855, the Newfoundland House of Assembly met, Governor Darling called upon Philip Francis Little to form the new administration.  Thus, after a prolonged and bitter struggle, Responsible Government was granted to this colony.  The event was triumph for the Liberal Party, for Little the new Premier, for John Kent who was named Colonial Secretary, and for all those who had maintained the will and purpose of the people of Newfoundland freely to administer their own affairs.
